"That’s where I feel the team management’s role": Ex-India captain backs Sanju Samson amid batting struggles

Sanju Samson has failed to live up to the expectation. After being reinstated to the top of the order in India’s T20I lineup, Samson's return to the playing XI has not been as smooth as he or the management would have hoped. In the ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand, India are on top with an unassailable 3-0 lead. However, Samson has struggled to make an impact, managing the scores of 10, 6, and 0 in the first three games.
This disappointing form has led to growing questions about his place in the team, especially with the T20 World Cup 2026 around the corner. Amidst the growing pressure, former India Test captain Ajinkya Rahane has come out in support of Sanju Samson, saying he should be given more time to find his rhythm. Rahane has urged head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav to stand by Samson and help him rediscover his best form.
“That’s where I feel the team management’s role and the captain’s role will be crucial, telling Sanju Samson that you’re going to play all these matches and also in the World Cup as well," Rahane said on Cricbuzz.
"So don’t worry about your place. Sometimes, when you have a guy like Abhishek Sharma at the other end who’s going really strong… Sanju Samson will have this pressure on himself as he’s basically trying to match him. The only thing for Sanjay Samson is sticking to his own game plan and backing himself."
Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan’s stellar performances have only added fuel to the fire surrounding Samson's position in the side. The young batter has consistently been in good form, demonstrating his ability to play the role of a dynamic wicketkeeper-batter at the top of the order. Samson, on the other hand, will be hoping to churn out runs in the remaining two T20Is to strengthen his place.
