Injury cloud hover over Hazlewood as Australia add Sean Abbott to T20 World Cup squad

Josh Hazlewood’s latest injury setback has dealt a big blow to Australia’s campaign at the T20I World Cup 2026, with the fast bowler set to miss the opening phase of the tournament as he continues his recovery in Sydney.
The fast bowler is the only member of Australia’s established pace attack, comprising Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc, selected for the tournament. However, his participation remains in doubt after an Achilles problem derailed his home Ashes summer. Notably, Mitchell Starc has retired from the T20Is, and Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the tournament due to a back injury. In the wake of the latest setback, Sean Abbott has been included in the squad as a travelling reserve.
"We felt with Josh it was more practical and beneficial for him to continue his rehabilitation at home in a familiar environment before travelling to Sri Lanka," Australian selector Tony Dodemaide said.
Australia squad: Mitch Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
Travelling reserve: Sean Abbott
