The countdown to the T20I World Cup 2026 has begun, with India and Sri Lanka set to jointly host the electrifying global spectacle that gets underway on February 7. India, who are in Group A, alongside Pakistan, USA, Netherlands, and Namibia, head into the tournament as one of the favourites to lift the trophy, and their performance over the past one and a half years makes a compelling case. Since October 2023, they have won 48 of their last 56 T20Is, carrying a strong record on the back of a remarkable run of consistency. Their relentless excellence has been bolstered by a commanding recent series victory over New Zealand, where India’s batting firepower was on full display.

India will begin their campaign at home, taking on USA on February 7 in Mumbai. Their recent success has been built upon a fearless and high-intent approach. What truly sets this Indian team apart is their consistency and hunger for success and, more importantly, every player understands their role clearly, which makes them hugely formidable heading into the mega event. There’s also history at stake. India are chasing something they’ve never achieved before: back-to-back T20 World Cup titles. To do it, they’ll bank on their batting and bowling.

At the top of the order, Abhishek Sharma remains India's defining force. His recent form has been devastating, and his ability to attack and provide early momentum has been the backbone of India's batting depth. He was profoundly crucial in India’s Asia Cup title win, and he enters the World Cup with confidence and clarity. He finished the Asia Cup with 314 runs in seven games. Suryakumar Yadav appears to have rediscovered his rhythm. His trademark power-hitting lit up the New Zealand series, bolstering India's batting ahead of the World Cup.

Alongside him, Ishan Kishan has also caught the attention with his batting pyrotechnics. His explosive knocks of 76 and 103 in the second and fifth matches against New Zealand showcased his match-winning ceiling and authority to dominate the opposition. The middle order gains further strength from the ever-reliable Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, whose all-round abilities provide invaluable balance. India’s bowling attack is equally imposing. The pace unit, led by Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana, will provide ruthlessness. In spin-friendly conditions across India and Sri Lanka, India will take confidence in Varun Chakaravarthy’s mystery, Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist-spin craft, and the all-round control of Axar Patel.

India squad: Suryakumar Yadav (c), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Rinku Singh
