Italy captain suffers severe shoulder injury
Italy’s World Cup campaign got off to a worrying start as they were dealt a major blow early in their opening match against Scotland at Eden Gardens. Captain Wayne Madsen was forced out of the game after picking up a serious shoulder injury while fielding, putting Italy under massive pressure.
The incident took place in the fourth over of Scotland’s innings. Madsen, standing at mid-wicket, launched himself into a dive in an attempt to cut off a shot. However, in doing so, he landed heavily and awkwardly on his left side on the practice pitches, putting him in visible distress.
Medical staff rushed to attend to Madsen, who moments later made his way off the field with his left arm supported in an improvised sling. This is a massive loss for Italy so early in the tournament, as Madsen brings experience in terms of leadership and batting. Notably, Madsen was named Italy's captain for the 2026 T20 World Cup after Joe Burns was not considered for the marquee event.
