Sri Lanka’s hopes of a deep run in the 2026 Men's T20 World Cup have suffered a serious setback with the loss of their key all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament after scans revealed a significant hamstring injury.

Hasaranga, who played a starring role in Sri Lanka’s opening match against Ireland, taking an excellent 3-25 to help secure a 20-run victory, sustained the injury during that game in Colombo. An MRI scan on Monday revealed a severe tear in his left hamstring. The news is a major blow for the co-hosts due to Hasaranga’s importance to the team as one of their most crucial match-winners with both ball and bat.

Following Hasaranga's injury, the ICC’s Event Technical Committee has approved the inclusion of Dushan Hemantha in Sri Lanka’s World Cup squad as Hasaranga’s replacement. Hemantha has featured in five ODIs and three T20Is for Sri Lanka, claiming six wickets across them.
