Zimbabwe stun Australia, hand shock defeat
In one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, Zimbabwe stunned Australia, registering a thrilling 23-run win in the 19th match of the ongoing T20 World Cup in Colombo on Friday. Defending a competitive total of 169/2, Zimbabwe bowled Australia out for 146 in 19.3 overs to script a famous victory that will boost their morale moving forward in the tournament.
After being asked to bat, Zimbabwe delivered a calculated batting performance, with opener Brian Bennett blasting a composed 64 off 56 deliveries. His knock formed the backbone of Zimbabwe’s total and brought stability at the top. Captain Sikandar Raza provided the late impetus, smacking a brisk 25 off 13 balls to lift the scoring rate in the death overs. Not to forget, Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ryal Burl also made noteworthy contributions of 35 runs each to power Zimbabwe to 169/2 in 20 overs.
Meanwhile, Australia's chase began on a dull note, losing four wickets inside the powerplay. Shockingly, Tim David and Cameron Green lost their wickets for a duck, making things more miserable for the Aussies. Openers Josh Inglis and Travis Head managed only 8 and 17, respectively. Matt Renshaw stood tall amid the collapse, scoring a gritty 65 that kept Australian hopes alive, but the lack of support from the other end ultimately proved costly. Zimbabwe's Blessing Muzarabani finished with figures of 4/17 from his four overs, while Evans returned with 3/23 to orchestrate Australia's downfall.
