Australia have confirmed a major late addition to their Men’s T20 World Cup squad, with Steve Smith drafted in ahead of a crucial must-win clash against Sri Lanka on Monday. The experienced batter replaces Josh Hazlewood, who was ruled out of the tournament earlier this month due to an Achilles injury.

When Hazlewood was initially sidelined, Australia had opted not to immediately name a replacement. But now their campaign hanging in the balance, they have included Smith in the squad. Smith, who has not featured in a T20I since February 2024, has been in supreme touch in domestic cricket, making him a valuable asset for Australia. He amassed 299 runs in just six matches in the BBL. His BBL season also included yet another century, marking his fourth in the competition across the past four seasons.

"ICC regulations stipulate any squad change must be submitted and activated on the day prior to a match," Australia selector Tony Dodemaide said.

"With Steve here, along with some uncertainty around Mitch and Marcus Stoinis, it made sense he (Smith) is activated and available for selection in time for the match, if required."

Updated Australia squad: Mitchell Marsh (c), Xavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Cameron Green, Nathan Ellis, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Renshaw, Marcus Stoinis, Adam Zampa
