Gloomy skies in Pallekele end Australia's T20 World up campaign
Rain has ended Australia’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in an unimaginable way, as a washout between Zimbabwe and Ireland on Tuesday confirmed their elimination from the tournament. Australia’s hopes of sneaking into the Super Eight stage depended on Zimbabwe failing to secure the single point they needed from the Group match.
Instead, the weather intervened to block Australia's path to Super Eight. Persistent rain in Kandy did not allow the game to get underway, and the one point awarded for the abandoned game was enough to send Zimbabwe through and Australia packing.
The weather was already bad early in the day. By the time players were due to take the field at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, heavy cloud cover and damp outfield conditions had already cast serious doubt over the start. Ground staff worked tirelessly to clear accumulated water from the covers. But rain returned once again, forcing officials to call the match off without a ball bowled.
