"Came out with overconfidence": Ex-Indian batter on India's crushing defeat against South Africa
India’s commanding run at the T20 World Cup came to a crashing halt as South Africa churned out a breathtaking performance to end the defending champions’ 12-match unbeaten streak. The crushing 76-run defeat exposed India's tactical and mental awareness, which, according to batting legend Sunil Gavaskar, India must urgently address. Gavaskar pointed out that India failed to read the conditions and showed a degree of overconfidence that cost them dearly in a high-stakes encounter.
South Africa, who decided to bat after winning the toss, found themselves under pressure after early breakthroughs, but experienced campaigner David Miller and youngster Dewald Brevis stitched a crucial 97-run partnership to shift the momentum. Their approach allowed South Africa to recover to a formidable 187/7. Lower in the order, Tristan Stubbs provided the late flourish, smashing 44 off 24.
“Having seen how Brevis and Miller built their partnership, that was the approach needed from the Indian batters. The Indian batters did not do that. They came out with overconfidence, threw their bat at everything and lost wickets. South Africa clearly outsmarted India and it was a well-deserved win for them," Gavaskar said on JioStar.
Meanwhile, chasing 188, India experienced a torrid start, with wickets falling at regular intervals. No batter could provide the momentum, or rather the acceleration, with defending champions being bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.
“India did not take notes from South Africa’s innings. They came out and threw their bat at every delivery hoping for a boundary. That is not how you play T20 cricket. You have to learn from the opposition. If they have scored well on a tricky surface like this, you have to get rid of your ego, observe and adjust,” he said.
