Sri Lanka appoint Gary Kirsten as new head coach of men’s team

Sri Lanka Cricket has appointed Gary Kirsten as the new head coach of the national men’s team. The former South African will take charge for a two-year term beginning on April 15, 2026. Kirsten, who arrives with a wealth of experience, will take over from Sanath Jayasuriya, who stepped down following Sri Lanka's Super Eight exit at the T20 World Cup 2026. As for Kirsten, he has had successful coaching stints in the past.
One of the most notable chapters of Kirsten’s coaching career came with India, where he played a central role in guiding the team to victory at the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup. He served as India's head coach from 2008 to 2011.
Following his successful stint with India, Kirsten returned to work with his home nation, South Africa. He coached the Proteas from 2011 to 2013. During his tenure, South Africa rose to the top of the ICC rankings across all three formats in 2013.
