New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi has been ruled out of the remainder of New Zealand's ongoing T20I series against South Africa after suffering a broken thumb during training, dealing a big setback to New Zealand as they look to bounce back in the series after going down in the first game. The leg-spinner injured his thumb while bowling in a training session on Saturday ahead of the opening match.

Medical scans later confirmed a fracture in the affected area. According to team management, Sodhi is expected to undergo a rehabilitation period of up to four weeks, ruling him out of the remaining matches in the five-match series. New Zealand have decided not to name a replacement for Sodhi in the squad because fast bowler Lockie Ferguson will join the squad for the second and third T20Is.

"Ish is very passionate about playing for New Zealand and we know he was looking forward to turning out in front of home fans after the World Cup campaign. He is hugely experienced in the T20 format and so will be a big miss for the remainder of the series," New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said

"We're confident with Lockie coming in, as well as Mitch and Cole that we have appropriate cover for the next two matches, before the squad transitions for the last two matches."

The second T20I is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in Hamilton. Currently, New Zealand are trailing in the series after the visitors secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory in the opening match at Bay Oval on Sunday.
