"He doesn't deserve a place in the T20I team": Ex-Pakistan player slams Shaheen Afridi

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has given a blunt assessment of star fast bowler Shaheen Afridi, saying that he does not deserve a place in Pakistan's T20I team. Afridi’s struggles have become increasingly evident since the T20 World Cup, where Pakistan endured a disappointing campaign, making a group exit. At the T20 World Cup, Afridi was expected to play an instrumental role; however, he wasn't up to the standards.

Pakistan failed to qualify for the semi-finals, which intensified scrutiny on senior players, with Afridi being one of the primary targets. Recently, Afridi led Pakistan in the three-match ODI series against Bangladesh, where the side suffered a humiliating series defeat.

“Now everyone is saying that Shaheen should not be the ODI captain. He shouldn't even be in the T20I team. People are now saying that he should become the captain of the T20I side after the World Cup debacle,” Latif said.

Latif also asserted that there appears to be a campaign to position Afridi as Pakistan’s next T20I captain. He outright dismissed the idea.

“Yes, he should have been earlier, but now he doesn't deserve a place in the T20I team. People are running a campaign to have him be the captain of the T20I team instead of ODIs. He doesn't even deserve a place. Now, the time is over,” he added.

Meanwhile, during the Bangladesh tour, Pakistan lost the first and third ODIs to go down in the series. They showed grit in the second game, claiming a massive 128-run win. However, they failed to maintain the momentum in the third game, suffering an 11-run loss. As for Shaheen, he will now be seen in the upcoming season of Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he will captain Lahore Qalandars, who are the defending champions.
