"Hopefully somewhere by mid-April": KKR head coach Abhishek Nayar shares update on Harshit Rana and Matheesha Pathirana's unavailability

Sri Lanka pacer Matheesha Pathirana is set to miss the opening phase of the Indian Premier League 2026, giving an early jolt to Kolkata Knight Riders. The update was confirmed by head coach Abhishek Nayar, who stated that the fast bowler is expected to join the squad only by mid-April. Pathirana’s absence has occurred due to a calf strain that not only sidelined him from the IPL’s initial matches but also ruled him out of the Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The injury took place during the tournament, where he managed to feature in three games before being forced off the field in a match against Australia. Since then, he has been undergoing rehabilitation, with his recovery timeline pushing back his IPL availability.

"The latest communication we have had is that hopefully somewhere by mid-April is when he will be match fit. That's what we know as of now. That is how it is looking for now," Nayar said during KKR's pre-season press conference.

Adding to KKR’s concerns is the injury cloud over all-rounder Harshit Rana. Rana suffered a knee injury during a warm-up match between India and South Africa ahead of the T20 World Cup. The injury ruled him out of the global tournament, and while there has been no official confirmation regarding his IPL participation, his availability remains uncertain. Coach Nayar hinted that the franchise is already evaluating backup options to cover Rana’s role

"Firstly, it is a big blow because Harshit has been an integral part of this team for the last couple of seasons, including the championship season. He has grown a lot as a cricketer over the years, so it's not easy to replace him," Nayar said.

"Having said that, over the last few days, we have looked at a few bowlers. We're trying to evaluate, with the help of the leadership group, who fits in and who can do that role to the best of their prowess. We haven't made the decision yet, but hopefully we will identify someone soon who can make a difference to this squad," he said.
