New Zealand have suffered a setback ahead of the fourth T20I against South Africa, with Tom Latham ruled out due to a thumb injury picked up in the third match. The development was confirmed by New Zealand Cricket on Sunday. In Latham's absence, James Neesham will lead the side.

Latham picked up the injury during the third T20I at Eden Park on Friday after being struck on the thumb by South African pacer Nqobani Mokoena. Even after copping the blow, Latham went on to bat and guided New Zealand to victory with an unbeaten 63. His composed knock played a crucial role in sealing an eight-wicket win for the hosts.

However, subsequent medical assessment has ruled him out of the upcoming Wellington clash as a precautionary measure. According to New Zealand Cricket, Latham’s availability for the fifth and final T20I will be determined following the results of his scans. Meanwhile, New Zealand have called up Tom Blundell as cover. Blundell last appeared in a T20I in April 2025. With the series being led by New Zealand 2-1, the fourth T20I now presents an opportunity for the side to step up and seal the series win.
