Shreyas Iyer blasts Punjab to win against lacklustre CSK
Punjab Kings scripted a memorable chase in Chennai on Friday, riding on a dazzling half-century from captain Shreyas Iyer to seal a five-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium. Chasing a total of 209, Punjab Kings had a blazing start with the opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh taking the attack to the opposition early on.
Arya’s 39 and Prabhsimran’s aggressive 43 ensured PBKS got off to a flying start, putting immediate pressure on the CSK bowling unit. Later, in the middle overs, Shreyas Iyer took charge, anchoring the innings nicely. His well-crafted 50 proved to be the backbone of the chase as PBKS sealed the victory in 18.4 overs. Cooper Connolly's quickfire 36 off 22 balls also played a crucial role.
Earlier, CSK, asked to bat, posted 209/9 in 20 overs, largely powered by a sensational knock from young talent Ayush Mhatre. He smashed 73 off just 43 deliveries, decorated with six fours and five sixes. He became the youngest player to register a half-century at Chepauk. CSK found stability through Mhatre’s impressive 95-run partnership with skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who contributed a steady 28. Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube also blazed 32 and 45*, respectively.
