Massive update on Pathirana and Hasaranga with regard to IPL participation

It's been over a week since the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 got underway, but a cloud of uncertainty continues to hover over the availability of key Sri Lankan players Matheesha Pathirana and Wanindu Hasaranga. Both cricketers are among the overseas recruits yet to join their respective franchises. Both players are battling injuries and have not received No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from Sri Lanka Cricket. Pathirana and Hasaranga sustained injuries during the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, which disrupted their immediate participation in the IPL.
Pathirana, who was picked up by KKR for Rs 18 crore, has been recovering from a calf strain, while Hasaranga has been dealing with a hamstring injury. Hasaranga was signed by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 2 crore. As per ESPNcricinfo, Hasaranga and Pathirana are among the 15 centrally contracted Sri Lankan players who have not yet undergone fitness tests. Overall, there are 45 centrally contracted players. 30 have taken the tests, with 24 passing the test and six failing it.
Notably, Sri Lanka Cricket has implemented strict fitness protocols for centrally contracted players. The board has made it clear that NOCs, essential for participation in overseas leagues like the IPL, will only be granted after players successfully pass these tests.
