Chennai Super Kings have brought in fast bowler Akash Madhwal as a replacement for Ayush Mhatre for the remainder of the IPL 2026 campaign. Mhatre, who has been the team’s leading run-scorer so far, suffered a hamstring injury during CSK’s clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 18.

The injury occurred while he was batting, putting him out of action. Following medical assessment, the franchise confirmed that Mhatre will be sidelined for a period of six to twelve weeks, ruling him out of the rest of the tournament. Madhwal joins the franchise at his base price of INR 30 lakh.

Akash Madhwal brings huge experience, having made an immediate impact in his first season in 2023, taking 14 wickets in eight games for Mumbai Indians. Although the franchise retained him, he couldn’t maintain that momentum in IPL 2024, where he took only five wickets across five matches. He was released ahead of the 2025 season; however, he was bought by Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.20 crore. But he struggled to impress, finishing with four wickets in four appearances. As a result, he went unsold in the IPL 2026 auction.
