New Zealand name strong squad for Women's T20 World Cup

New Zealand have unveiled a strong squad for the upcoming ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales, selecting experienced performers as they aim to defend their title. 10 members from their previous championship-winning campaign have retained their places, underlining the team’s confidence in the core group that powered them to success. Star all-rounder Melie Kerr has been entrusted with captaincy duties.
Her appointment follows the recent transition from long-serving skipper Sophie Devine, who remains part of the squad and brings huge experience. Veterans like Suzie Bates and Devine are set to make their 10th appearance at a T20 World Cup. Their presence will be crucial in guiding the younger players through the pressures of a global tournament.
Among the newcomers, Nensi Patel and batter Izzy Sharp have earned their maiden call-ups to the T20 World Cup squad. Notably, Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu will retire from international cricket after the tournament.
"To have our three most senior players all finishing their careers at the same tournament is a rare and special occasion. All three have had distinguished careers in their own right and given so much to this team and the game in general," New Zealand coach Ben Sawyer said.
"There'll be a time at the end of the tournament to further acknowledge and celebrate the trio and I know at present they're very focussed on performing well in their final mission with the team."
