Shreyas Iyer is likely to be appointed as India's new T20I captain for the upcoming T20I tour of Ireland and England. Iyer will take over leadership responsibilities from Suryakumar Yadav, with the management building the side for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup scheduled to be held in Australia and New Zealand, according to ESPNcricinfo. Suryakumar's recent performances have not been upto standards, having managed only 242 runs from nine innings at the 2026 T20I World Cup, where he also captained the team.

He also struggled in IPL 2026, scoring only 270 runs in 13 innings. On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer has strengthened his position both as a batter and a leader. His leadership record in the IPL has been highly impressive. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the title win in 2024. He also guided Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings to IPL finals in 2020 and 2025, respectively. Iyer has been consistent with the bat as well, scoring 604 runs in IPL 2025. And most recently, he had a productive season in IPL 2026, where he amassed 498 runs at a strike rate nearing 169.

According to the report, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is also expected to be named in the squads. At 15 years of age, Vaibhav will become the youngest player named in an Indian men's squad since Sachin Tendulkar. Sooryavanshi has been in extraordinary form.

His fearless approach and power-hitting made him one of the standout performers of IPL 2026, where he scored a staggering 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30. Meanwhile, before he joins the Indian team, Vaibhav is set to represent India A in a tri-nation series in Sri Lanka from June 9 to June 21, featuring hosts Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
