Ben Stokes urged not to make emotional retirement call

Following the nightclub incident, England captain Ben Stokes and pacer Gus Atkinson paid a hefty price, with the duo being stood down from England's squad for the second Test against New Zealand, starting on June 17. In Stokes' absence, England stalwart Joe Root was handed the reins to lead the side. England had a perfect start to the series, registering a comfortable 115-run win riding on Atkinson's heroic performance after he took 5-30 in the second innings.
However, what transpired after the victory was quite shocking as Stokes and Atkinson broke team protocols to celebrate the team's victory over New Zealand. Both the players had breached the team's midnight curfew, prompting the ECB to launch an investigation into the matter. Since the incident, there has been enormous chatter as to what Ben Stokes' latest move would be. Meanwhile, former England star Nasser Hussain has warned Stokes against making an emotional retirement call.
"Ben Stokes has been there for England a lot. He's been there as a captain, he's been there as a player at their finest moments - 50-over World Cups, T20 World Cups," Hussain told the Sky Sports Cricket podcast.
"He's been a warrior for England and he got it wrong this time - he got it horribly wrong. I don't think that is a sackable offence. Ben will be in a dark place at the moment. I just hope Ben doesn't think 'I've let so many people down that I'm going to retire. I'm going to make an emotional decision and retire', because I think that would be a really sad way to end for one of England's greats," he added.
For many years, Stokes has been the cornerstone of England's batting and bowling departments, and since assuming the captaincy, he has brought a gigantic transformation in the side. Keeping Stokes' extensive contribution in mind, Hussain felt that the legendary all-rounder does not deserve to go in this style.
"One of England's greats should not go out like that. I think he deserves better. I do feel a bit sad if this was the last we saw of Ben Stokes - I really hope it's not," Hussain said.
