Virat Kohli pays touching tribute to NZ stalwart Williamson

New Zealand batting icon Kane Williamson announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, putting an end to a tremendously glittering career. The shock decision came a few days ahead of New Zealand's crucial second Test against England. Williamson stepped away from international cricket after a distinguished 16-year career that earned him admiration for his exceptional leadership qualities and a calm demeanour.
Williamson was one of New Zealand's greatest-ever cricketers, as he, throughout his Test career, accumulated 9,515 runs while piling up 9,831 runs across ODIs and T20Is. Williamson recently appeared for the Black Caps, including the one-off Test against Ireland in Belfast and the opening Test against England at Lord's, where he scored 0 and 18.
Following the announcement, tributes poured in from players and among the most touching messages came from Indian batting superstar Virat Kohli. Taking to social media, Kohli shared a heartfelt note, praising Williamson's marvellous career.
"From an opponent to a friend over the years. It's been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years but more than that I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond. I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet. Wishing you nothing but the best always brother. You've done your bit, you deserve to enjoy all of it now and put your feet up. Well done mate, life's only just begun," Kohli stated on X.
Williamson also led New Zealand across three formats during the period from 2016 to 2024. Under his leadership, New Zealand made it to two World Cup finals, three semi-finals, and won the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) in 2021.
