A superb batting performance from Shubman Gill helped India seal a six-wicket win against England in the first ODI in Birmingham on Tuesday. Gill's calm approach under pressure guided India through a challenging chase after the early dismissal of two of India's most experienced batters in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Chasing a target of 259, India suffered an early setback when Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 11, followed by Virat Kohli, who managed five runs. Amid the pressure, Gill led the recovery with a valuable knock of 80 runs. Gill, however, was forced to retire hurt after experiencing cramps in his right foot. Later, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel slammed 52 and 57, respectively, unbeaten, to take the side to victory.

Earlier, England deciding to bat recovered well after a disastrous start. They were struggling at 107/6 before Joe Root and Liam Dawson mounted a spirited fightback. Root scored an unbeaten 76, while Dawson made a determined 68 to take England to 258 before being bowled out in 47.5 overs.
