Afghanistan have appointed Rahmat Shah as the team's new Test and ODI captain. The experienced batter will now take charge of the side at a crucial time, with wicketkeeper-batter Rahmanullah Gurbaz appointed as his deputy. Rahmat Shah's first challenge as the captain will be Afghanistan's upcoming five-match ODI series against Ireland. The tour will be an important opportunity for him to begin his tenure on a positive note.

"The Afghanistan Cricket Board appreciates Hashmatullah Shahidi's valuable service, dedication, and leadership during his tenure as captain and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors. The Board also wishes Rahmat Shah Zurmati every success in his new role and looks forward to working with him," the ACB said in a statement.

Rahmat Shah comes at the helm after serving as Afghanistan's vice-captain in both Tests and ODIs since May 31, 2021. Meanwhile, Rahmat's appointment as captain comes in the wake of Hashmatullah Shahidi's decision to resign from the role.
