Shane McDermott appointed Afghanistan’s assistant and fielding coach

Afghanistan have appointed former Australian wicketkeeper-batter Shane McDermott as the team’s new assistant and fielding coach. He will assume his role on August 1 ahead of Afghanistan's five-match ODI series against Ireland. His appointment comes at a crucial stage, with Afghanistan team going through a transition. Recently, Rahmat Shah was named Afghanistan's ODI and Test captain.
He will work alongside head coach Richard Pybus, who was recently named Afghanistan’s head coach following the departure of Jonathan Trott. Over the past few years, McDermott has played a key role as a specialist fielding coach across different cricketing nations. He spent three years with Bangladesh in a similar role before joining Sri Lanka, where he served for three years. His expertise in improving athleticism, catching efficiency and overall fielding discipline has earned praise throughout his coaching career. Notably, before taking up the Afghanistan role, McDermott was Pakistan's all-format fielding coach, remaining in the role from July 2025 until July 2026. The team will look to treat this series as a vital opportunity in their preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
