Albie Morkel named head coach of Joburg Super Kings

Former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel is set to take up a new challenge after being appointed as the head coach of Joburg Super Kings for the fifth edition of the SA20 league. The franchise confirmed the appointment on Thursday, with Morkel set to take over from Stephen Fleming, who decided to step away after leading the side for four consecutive campaigns.
Notably, Fleming was on Thursday named the head of England’s Test team. As for Morkel, he carries immense experience, having played one Test, 58 ODIs and 50 T20Is for South Africa.
"It is an incredible honour to be appointed Head Coach of the Joburg Super Kings. From wearing the Super Kings jersey as a player to now leading one of its franchises as Head Coach, this journey is truly special. I look forward to building on the strong foundations we've created together and helping this group achieve its full potential,” Albie Morkel said on his appointment.
Joburg Super Kings’ owner Rupa Gurunath welcomed Morkel’s appointment.
"Albie Morkel understands our culture well, having experienced it both as a player and as a coach. His leadership and understanding of the South African cricket landscape gives us great confidence as we move forward."
Meanwhile, the fifth edition of SA20 will get underway on January 17, 2027, with Joburg Super Kings set to kick off their campaign on January 18.
