Afghanistan seal 2027 World Cup spot with nervy win over Ireland
Rashid Khan showed his all-round prowess in the third ODI against Ireland, carrying the side to a three-wicket win in a tense encounter in Belfast. The victory was quite important, as it not only gave Afghanistan a commanding 2–0 lead in the five-match series but also secured their qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which is to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Ireland were bowled out for 206 in 46.3 overs after being asked to bat. Afghanistan's bowling attack applied relentless pressure throughout the innings, with Rashid Khan being central to that attack, claiming three wickets to make things miserable for Ireland.
Chasing the target of 207, Afghanistan were off to a great start after opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz slammed 72 at the top. However, Afghanistan’s middle-order did not manage to take advantage of a powerful start. But, somehow, Rashid Khan, down the order, pummelled 37 unbeaten to guide the team to victory. Yamin Ahmadzai also remained unbeaten on 4 off 26 balls, playing a major role alongside Rashid. Meanwhile, the fourth ODI will be played on Wednesday in Belfast only.
