Moises Henriques set to lead Portugal in T20 World Cup qualification campaign
Veteran Australian allrounder Moises Henriques, who represented Australia across all formats, has been appointed captain of Portugal as the European side gets ready to secure a place at the 2028 T20 World Cup. Henriques has played 4 Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is for Australia. Now, after retiring from Australian domestic cricket, he is set to captain Portugal. The relation between Henriques and Portugal goes back to his childhood, as he was born in Madeira.
He moved to Australia with his family when he was young and built a powerful career in Australian cricket. He became a familiar figure in New South Wales cricket and was an important member of the Sydney Sixers setup. Last month, Henriques confirmed that he was retiring from Australian domestic cricket.
For Portugal it will be a crucial European qualifying tournament in Finland. They currently sit 37th in the ICC men's T20I rankings and face a competitive group in the T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C. The tournament will be played from August 14 to 20, with Portugal drawn in Group B alongside Israel, Germany, Greece and Czechia. The team finishing first in the group will advance to the final on August 21, where they will meet the winner of Group A.
The winning team in the qualifier would secure a place alongside Scotland, Jersey and Denmark in the European regional final. From there, the top two teams will advance to the global qualifying stage as they hope to make it to the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
