“Small things that will make a big difference”: Joe Root ahead of first Test against Pakistan

Joe Root is set to begin his second spell as England captain, sending a clear message to the team that adaptability must become important. England return to the ICC World Test Championship when they face Pakistan in the first Test starting on Wednesday at Headingley. Root has inherited the captaincy following a period of major change in English Test cricket, and he has set his sight on combining the fearless approach of the recent past with a willingness to adjust to different situations. Before Root, Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum were at the helm, and under their leadership England adopted an attacking brand of cricket.

"I don't think there's a huge amount we need to change. It's small things that will make a big difference," Root said at the press conference.

"It's not about ripping it up, I think it's about keeping a lot of the good stuff we've been doing for a period of time, stuff that Ben and Baz built for a long while," he said.

"I don't believe there is one way of playing Test cricket. You've got to be adaptable and play the situation. It's never the same throughout five days, there's different challenges and you've got to adjust to the ebbs and flows throughout."

However, England's recent series against New Zealand highlighted some of the challenges. In the wake of a 2-1 defeat against New Zealand, lStokes announced his retirement from international cricket during the final Test and Brendon McCullum was sacked as head coach. Notably, Root is no stranger to the responsibility of leading England. He previously remained on a record 65 occasions between 2017 and 2022.

"The landscape is different. I’m a different player and person than I was when I took over as captain. I'm in a very fortunate, unique position where I've got 60-odd games of experience to look back on. There are things I might want to change and do slightly differently."

"I had time to step away, play in a different environment, different coach, different captain, and see the game from a different lens. In many ways I feel as ready as any other England captain that's been before, and to have that amount of experience is invaluable," he said.
