Ex-Indian player advises Pant avoid captaining DC

Pant’s return to Delhi Capitals has triggered captaincy buzz. His return to DC comes after his spell with Lucknow Super Giants, where he was appointed captain but struggled to bring about the kind of results expected from him. With DC now bringing him back, speculation over the team’s next captain has intensified. However, former India opener Wasim Jaffer believes Pant should think carefully before accepting the responsibility again.

Jaffer feels that Pant ought to concentrate on his performances rather than taking on the additional responsibility. Pant’s return was completed through a trade between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants after the 2026 IPL season. As part of the agreement, Pant was valued at Rs 15 crore, taking a major cut.

In exchange, DC’s left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav moved to LSG for Rs 13.50 crore. Notably, DC were led by Axar Patel in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 but his captaincy came under scrutiny following a series of underwhelming results.

“If Delhi Capitals even offer him the captaincy, I think it is better for him to say no. You know, the way KL has done it, he is enjoying his time as a player. There is a lot of pressure when you have to lead a franchise, the pressure from the owners, the expectations, the pressure from the fans, plus you have to focus on your own performance. On top of that, he is also a wicketkeeper and has to bat,” Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.

Under Pant’s captaincy, Lucknow ended the 2025 season in seventh place, which was followed by a more disappointing campaign in 2026 where they fiinished at the bottom of the points table.
