VVS Laxman to serve as team India head coach at 2026 Asian Games
India have appointed former batter VVS Laxman to oversee the men’s cricket team at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. Laxman will head a support team that includes former India spinner Sunil Joshi, batting coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and newly appointed fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh. The development was confirmed on September 2 through a circular issued by India’s Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The decision comes due to a clash in schedule involving two India commitments. The Asian Games tournament is scheduled from September 17 to October 3, and India’s senior team will simultaneously be involved in a home ODI series against the West Indies from September 27 to October 3.
Due to West Indies assignment, regular head coach Gautam Gambhir will be unavailable, as he, along with his coaching staff, will remain with the ODI squad. Notably, Laxman in the past has repeatedly stepped up to serve as head coach in the absence of regular staff.
