“He has achieved so much”: Sourav Ganguly backs Mohammed Shami
Mohammed Shami's continued absence from India's white-ball plans has constantly been a topic of discussion, but former India captain Sourav Ganguly does not believe the experienced fast bowler is being ignored by the national selectors. Ganguly, describing him as an "absolute champion," said that the star bowler has already achieved a lot in his career.
Notably, Shami has been away from the Indian team since the Champions Trophy in 2025, where he played an important role in India’s title-winning campaign. Shami recently played a key role for East Zone in their successful Duleep Trophy campaign, helping the side end a long 13-year wait for the title.
“He is not being neglected. He has played a lot. He is an absolute champion. But as you grow older, this happens. It happens with everyone," Ganguly said while speaking to reporters at Eden Gardens on Thursday.
“What makes me happy for Shami is that he turns out day in and day out in domestic cricket and performs. It is terrific to see. He has achieved so much," Ganguly said.
Shami’s recent performances have led to questions about whether the fast bowler could make a return to India's ODI setup, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon. However, Ganguly believes it would be premature to draw conclusions about Shami's World Cup chances because the tournament is scheduled to be played next year.
“That's a long way. I can't comment. It's in October (2027). It's a long way.”
