“It was a tough pill to swallow”: Shreyas Iyer reflects on difficult start to captaincy

India captain Shreyas Iyer admitted the fact that his first few months at the helm of the T20I side were challenging but also felt that the experience had helped him gain the importance of maintaining balance. Iyer’s remarks came after India’s dominant performance against Afghanistan in New Delhi on Tuesday, where they won the second T20I by seven wickets to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Iyer’s tenure had begun with two challenging assignments overseas, with India losing 2-0 to Ireland before suffering a 4-0 defeat in the five-match series against England.
“Yes, certainly. It was a tough pill to swallow at the start, but the journey is always going to be a rollercoaster,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation after India's win in the second T20I vs Afghanistan.
“You have to be in equilibrium as much as possible and see to it that you enjoy the moment and not think much about what has happened in the past. I have said it in my previous interviews as well, the more you embrace the situation, the better it gets,” Iyer said.
In the second game, Sanju Samson starred for India with a brilliant 57-run knock off 22 deliveries. Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan made 39 and 38* as India overhauled the target of 160 in 14.5 overs. Touching upon India’s win, Iyer asserted that the side was eyeing this kind of performance.
"Looking at the last match and coming into this one, we were demanding a comprehensive win, and today was the right example of it,” Iyer said.
Iyer also hinted that there might be some changes in the third and final game, which will be played on Thursday.
“Definitely, we want all of them to get used to the wicket and get some practice, so it will be a good opportunity to give a chance to the guys sitting out," Iyer said.
