New Zealand have been dealt a major setback ahead of their upcoming five-match T20I series against India, with Mark Chapman and Zak Foulkes ruled out due to injuries. Chapman sustained a hamstring injury while featuring in a T20 league in Europe last month.

The injury has ruled him out of the entire T20I series, with the team hopeful that he will recover in time to feature in the subsequent ODI series against India. Foulkes, meanwhile, is struggling with a hip flexor problem. Moreover, Foulkes is yet to receive a definitive timeline for his return to competitive cricket. In their absence, New Zealand have brought in all-rounder Josh Clarkson and fast bowler Blair Tickner to strengthen their 16-member squad.

"I’m gutted for Mark and Zak and I wish them both a smooth recovery,” New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said.

“We’re fortunate to be able to lean on the expertise of Josh and Blair. I know they’re both very excited to be involved in what’s shaping up to be an epic T20 series.”

The five-match T20I series begins in Christchurch on October 22. After the shortest format, New Zealand will face India in five ODIs and two Tests.

New Zealand squad: Mitchell Santner (c), Finn Allen, Michael Bracewell, Josh Clarkson, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Bevon Jacobs, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Tim Seifert, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner
