“You don't shrug off any defeat”: Gautam Gambhir on India’s defeat against West Indies

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has urged his team to look inward after suffering a disappointing six-wicket loss to the West Indies in the second T20I in Ranchi on Friday. India came across many challenging factors, including heavy dew, but Gambhir made it clear that the side needs to take responsibility after going down in the second game. Chasing a target of 250 runs, West Indies unleashed a magnificent batting display to reach the target in 18.3 overs, handing India a comprehensive defeat to level the five-match series 1-1.
"You don't shrug off any defeat. If you want to keep improving, you don't want to put anything under the carpet,” Gambhir said at the press conference.
"We are a world-champion team, so we want to keep improving. Obviously, these are tough conditions to bowl. We know that flat wickets with the dew (are) obviously tough, but we need to figure out and find the way to try and stop the opposition. Especially when they lost two wickets in the first over and then lost three wickets in the first six."
West Indies were able to overhaul the target easily after Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford played devastating knocks of 102* and 84 respectively.
“Obviously it was tough, but again, credit to West Indies; the way Sherfane and Shai Hope batted, we know they are world-class batters, especially in this format. It was tough on us, but we're going to keep improving."
Gambhir also lauded the brilliant batting display by Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford.
"Shai is a world-class cricketer. We respect him for what he's done in white-ball cricket, not only in the 50-over format but in this format as well. His record speaks for him. But again, what he did today, especially after losing two wickets in the first six overs and continue batting at a run rate of 12-plus with Sherfane, just shows how good they are when the wicket is flat and there's dew on the ground,” Gambhir said.
