Sanju Samson silences critics with 82-run knock against West Indies

After a string of disappointing performances, Sanju Samson finally made his presence felt with a blistering knock against the West Indies in Ranchi. The Kerala-born opener smashed 82 runs off just 41 balls in the second T20I, responding to criticism at a crucial stage of his career. Samson had delivered three crucial innings during the 2026 T20 World Cup, including the final, but struggled to maintain that momentum on the tours of Ireland and England. Meanwhile, the emergence of young sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi added another layer of competition for Samson, making every opportunity even more important.

However, Samson answered his critics in style with his aggressive batting display in Ranchi. Speaking after his knock, Samson was asked what had made the difference in this innings compared to his previous four outings in the format. Responding to the question, Samson said, “Nothing. I don't think so. I think being a professional cricketer playing for India, I think you definitely take care of the professional side of it. You do your preparation, you do your practice, you do your training, you do everything possible in your hands.” He further acknowledged the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket, explaining that even after preparing well, the final result is not always in a player's control. “To be very honest, I think we all know that in this format, the result isn't in your hands; there is only one way to go. So you cannot say I have had three bad innings; let us take some time, let us build my innings and then we will see,” Samson added. Taking responsibility for his recent struggles, the Indian batter made it clear that he was not looking to blame anyone else for his lack of runs. “I am taking the blame on myself. I don't blame anyone else for not scoring runs, actually. That is my job and I try to do it every time I step out onto the ground,” he said.

Samson's 82 off 41 balls marked his ninth half-century in T20 internationals. The innings could prove important as he looks to regain consistency and strengthen his position in India's playing XI. After facing questions over his form, Samson has delivered a timely response with the bat. His focus will now be on building on this performance and making the most of the opportunities ahead.
