Australian star Steve Smith accomplished a massive milestone in his Test career during the third day of the opening Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban on Sunday. The Australian legend surpassed England Test captain Joe Root on the all-time list of catches.

Smith created history with a splendid slip catch to dismiss South African batter David Bedingham off Pat Cummins. Bedingham, who was batting on 49, tried a back-foot drive, but he remained unsuccessful in his attempt and edged the ball to second slip, with Smith Smith diving to his left to complete a breathtaking catch.

This took Smith’s Test catch tally to 221, breaking Joe Root’s record of 220 catches in Test cricket. Root now sits in second place on the list. Former India captain Rahul Dravid is third with 210 catches.

221 - Steve Smith

220 - Joe Root

210 - Rahul Dravid
