Hazlewood on Australia's bowling success

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has highlighted the importance of reverse swing after Australia secured a series lead against South Africa in Durban. The experienced pacer said the conditions at Kingsmead helped the Australian bowlers generate reverse swing, which played an important role in their victory. Australia's fast bowlers struggled to find reverse swing during their warm-up match in Potchefstroom, but the conditions in Durban proved more helpful. The dry and abrasive pitch allowed the ball to deteriorate, giving the bowlers an additional weapon against the batters.

Hazlewood produced an outstanding performance, taking a career-best six wickets for 49 runs to help Australia finish the match strongly. He explained that reverse swing is less common on Australian pitches because they usually offer more grass and seam movement, allowing the ball to remain in good condition for longer. "It's probably with Australia pitches being the green seamers, it just doesn't get talked about at all," Hazlewood said. He added that the conditions in South Africa were more suitable for reverse swing. "Here in South Africa, it was just an abrasive wicket, it was very hard underfoot. We probably got a hint of it in the first innings and then as the game goes, it just sort of deteriorates more and you get a bit more. So we knew it was crucial," he explained.

Hazlewood also praised fellow Australian fast bowler Scott Boland, who provides valuable support to the team's leading pace attack. With Boland and Michael Neser available as backup options, Australia have plenty of depth in their bowling lineup. "He barely bowls poorly," Hazlewood said about Boland. "Every net the boys come in, it's like, geez, Scotty again. I think he'll play a part in this series and I think he'll play a part in the next 12, 18 months. Class act, his record ridiculous," Hazlewood said.

Australia will look to continue their strong bowling performances in the next Test in Gqeberha, where conditions could once again make reverse swing an important factor. However, rain and a lush outfield could affect how much assistance the fast bowlers receive.
