Ryan Rickelton and Wiaan Mulder produced remarkable fighting centuries to revive South Africa's hopes in the third and final Test against Australia in Cape Town, setting up a thrilling final-day showdown in the series decider. With the Proteas staring at defeat on Day 4, the childhood friends joined forces to stitch together a crucial 154-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Rickelton scored a determined 101, while Mulder smashed 115, helping South Africa reach 387 in their second innings and set Australia a challenging target of 288 runs for victory. The partnership proved to be a turning point in the contest, bringing the hosts back into contention.

The duo also created history with their outstanding performances, becoming the first pair batting at No. 6 and No. 7 or lower to score centuries against Australia in the second innings of a Test match. Overall, it was only the fourth instance in Test cricket history of a No. 6 and No. 7 pair scoring hundreds in a team's second innings, and the first since 1989, when Australia's Dean Jones and Steve Waugh achieved the feat against Sri Lanka in Hobart. The milestone was first recorded in 1937, when Australian greats Jack Fingleton and Don Bradman scored centuries against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Adding to the significance of the achievement, Rickelton and Mulder are childhood friends and both graduated from St Stithians College in Johannesburg.

Rickelton's gritty innings featured 12 boundaries before he was run out by Josh Inglis in the 120th over. Following his dismissal, Australia appeared poised to finish the innings quickly, but Mulder continued his aggressive approach, striking 10 fours and four sixes. With valuable support from Kagiso Rabada at the other end, Mulder reached his century before Pat Cummins dismissed him as the final wicket, bringing South Africa's innings to a close at 387 in 134.4 overs. Australia now face a target of 288 on the final day, with both teams having a genuine chance of securing victory. What appeared to be Australia's match on Day 4 has turned into a gripping contest, thanks to the historic resistance shown by Rickelton and Mulder.
