Dhruv Jurel, Devdutt Padikkal lead India's recovery against New Zealand A

India A recovered from an early setback to finish the opening day of the second unofficial Test against New Zealand A at 291/7 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Captain Dhruv Jurel remained unbeaten on 99, while Devdutt Padikkal scored a valuable 80 to steady the innings. New Zealand A made an excellent start after opting to bowl, with Fraser Sheat dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck in the very first over. Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan then joined forces to rebuild the innings, adding 91 runs for the second wicket. Sudharsan contributed 41 off 63 balls before being dismissed by Jarrod McKay shortly after lunch. Yash Rathod also failed to make a big contribution, scoring just 13.
Padikkal continued his impressive form on the tour, striking 12 boundaries during his 80-run knock. However, his dismissal triggered a middle-order collapse as India A slipped to 160/6. Sheat played a key role in the collapse, dismissing Padikkal, Smaran Ravichandran and Washington Sundar in quick succession to put the visitors under pressure. With the team struggling, Jurel took responsibility and played a composed innings to rebuild the batting effort. He first added 62 runs with Manav Suthar, who scored 22, before joining forces with Akash Deep for another important partnership. Their unbroken 69-run stand helped India A recover and cross the 250-run mark before stumps. Jurel finished the day unbeaten on 99, just one run short of a well-deserved century, while Sheat was the standout bowler for New Zealand A with figures of 4/50. Brett Randell, Jarrod McKay and Jayden Lennox picked up one wicket each.
Brief Scores: India A 291/7 (Dhruv Jurel 99*, Devdutt Padikkal 80; Fraser Sheat 4/50) vs New Zealand A.
