Shubhman Gill opens up on New Zealand Tour schedule, says ODIs before T20Is would have been ideal

India captain Shubman Gill has expressed confidence in the team's squad depth ahead of the five-match ODI series against New Zealand, saying that any Indian team taking the field is capable of defeating any opposition. The series will also serve as an important preparation opportunity for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in South Africa.
Speaking ahead of the first ODI in Auckland on Wednesday, November 4, "I believe any Indian team that takes the field is capable of defeating any opposition," Gill said.
He added that strong performances from young players in New Zealand would boost their confidence and give India more options for next year's World Cup, even if some regular players are unavailable.
Gill also pointed out that New Zealand's conditions, particularly the bounce and movement, could help India prepare for South Africa. He backed the team's strategy of using tall fast bowlers such as Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna to trouble batters in the middle overs.
The skipper further revealed that India will follow a flexible approach in the middle order, with Axar Patel and KL Rahul available for promotion depending on match situations.
Gill also expressed hope over Hardik Pandya's return, highlighting his value as a fast-bowling all-rounder who can contribute in all phases of the game. Pandya is expected to play domestic cricket before making a possible return to the national side.
India will begin their five-match ODI series against New Zealand in Auckland on November 4.
