Williamson returns as New Zealand announce squad for first Test against West Indies

New Zealand have named a strong 14-player squad for the opening Test of their home series against the West Indies in Christchurch, with veteran batter Kane Williamson returning to the side. There has also been a recall for pace bowler Blair Tickner. Tickner’s return marks his first Test call-up since 2023. Meanwhile, Williamson’s inclusion provides a boost to the Black Caps’ top order as they look to begin the series on a high note. Kyle Jamieson is the notable absentee from the squad. He was not included in the squad, as his return to red-ball cricket is being carefully managed following a significant back injury. However, New Zealand's pace attack is bolstered by Jacob Duffy and rising talent Zak Foulkes. Foulkes, in particular, arrives with momentum after a memorable debut against Zimbabwe, where he claimed nine wickets.
“Kane’s ability on the field speaks for itself and it will be great to have his skills as well as his leadership back in the Test group,” New Zealand head coach Rob Walter said.
“He’s had a bit of time off to get himself ready for red-ball cricket, and I know he’s looking forward to playing for Northern Districts in the second round of the Plunket Shield (New Zealand domestic four-day competition) in the lead-up to the first Test," he said.
Matt Fisher (shin), Will O'Rourke (back) and Ben Sears (hamstring) were not taken into consideration for selection due to injury.
