R Ashwin lashes out at Indian management following India's defeat to South Africa

India’s crushing loss to South Africa in the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash on Sunday has triggered intense debate, as their prospects of making it to the semi-final have taken a massive hit. South Africa delivered a sharp performance, coming out more decisively and tactically superior. India, on the other hand, appeared unsettled both in team balance and execution.
Though several factors contributed to the setback, one decision has drawn widespread criticism, which is the exclusion of Axar Patel from the playing XI. Lately, Axar has been one of India’s most dependable T20 performers and was consistent in the group stage.
Still, despite his consistent contributions, the team management opted to bench him for the crucial Super 8 game. India went with Washington Sundar to maintain specific match-ups against South Africa’s heavy batting line-up. Following India's defeat, former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin hit out at the management for making such decisions.
"I agree that the IPL is good for match-ups, but you have to change the team because you are going to play 14 games. But in such ICC campaigns, the more stable you can keep the team, the better. I agree 100% that you have to use Washington Sundar against left-handers; you have to play him, I agree with all that. But Axar Patel has been your MVP in T20 cricket. Let's not forget what Axar Patel has done," Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.
Another major talking point was India’s decision to send Rinku Singh at No. 8. By the time he walked in, the match had already gone out of India's reach.
"Rinku Singh batting at No. 8. You have eight batters, and Rinku is batting at No. 8, he cannot be sent in to bat at such a position. No disrespect to Washington Sundar. He is a fabulous batter. We know his batting skills. It was a lesson South Africa taught India: 'Please don't come to games underprepared," he said.
India's upcoming assignments against Zimbabwe and West Indies are highly crucial for them in order to strengthen their position for the semi-finals. They will face Zimbabwe on Thursday in Chennai.
