"Gambhir has fought for his selection": Shoaib Akhtar on Sanju Samson

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has praised India head coach Gautam Gambhir for playing a crucial role in the rise of Sanju Samson during the ongoing T20 World Cup. According to Akhtar, Gambhir’s backing helped bring Samson back into the playing XI at a critical stage of the tournament. And Samson has seized the opportunity in remarkable fashion.
Samson was recalled for India’s must-win encounter against West Indies in what was a virtual quarterfinal. Under immense pressure, Sanju produced one of the finest knocks of the tournament. Chasing a challenging target of 196 in Kolkata, Samson delivered a match-winning unbeaten 97, guiding India to victory.
"Samson has been in the Indian cricket circuit since 2014. Back in the days when I used to work in India, around 2015, he was quite popular. He waited for a long period of time because of the keepers—Dhoni, then Karthik, and others. Even now, Gambhir has fought for his selection. Basically, his selection has been done forcefully and after a lot of criticism," said Akhtar in a video on Tapmad.
Samson carried that momentum into the semi-final against England, where he once again stepped up when it mattered most. He smashed a blistering 89 from 42 balls, helping India seal a convincing win and march into the final. So far, Samson’s contributions have been outstanding in the tournament. In four matches, he has accumulated 232 runs at an impressive average of 77.33. India are now preparing for the final against New Zealand, scheduled to be played in Ahmedabad on Sunday, and once again Samson’s form will be crucial.
