India’s spectacular run to the T20 World Cup final

The 2026 T20 World Cup has been an eye-popping tournament, witnessing thrilling finishes, explosive batting, and tense moments. Co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the global event, which began on February 7 with 20 teams competing across multiple venues before narrowing down to the final showdown on March 8, delivered weeks of high-octane cricket and unforgettable performances in high-pressure situations. Among 20 teams, defending champions India once again remained on top, navigating a compelling path to the final, where they will face New Zealand at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Sunday. India's journey to the final has been highlighted by memorable victories, outstanding individual performances, and the potential to deliver under pressure.
India headed into the tournament as defending champions and were placed in Group A alongside Pakistan, United States, Netherlands, and Namibia. India began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a thumping win against the United States. India's campaign in the group stage was incredibly smooth, registering victories over Namibia, Netherlands and Pakistan. In the group stage, India had a high-voltage clash against Pakistan. In a commanding performance, India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs in Colombo. India were highly dominant across all departments, keeping Pakistan on the ropes.
The Super Eight phase turned out to be a bit challenging for India, testing their consistency. They were drawn into a competitive group alongside South Africa, West Indies and Zimbabwe. India stumbled against South Africa but responded strongly, winning against Zimbabwe and West Indies. The team responded with fearless batting and sharp bowling strategies.
A standout moment came in a match against Zimbabwe, where India produced one of the highest totals of the tournament—256 runs. All batters contributed immensely. Another crucial encounter saw India face the West Indies in a must-win game to secure a semifinal berth. In that match, wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson rose to the occasion, delivering a brilliant performance, scoring a remarkable 97 during a challenging run chase. His innings helped India chase down a target of 196 and book their place in the knockout stage.
India’s biggest test came in the semi-final against England at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. In a nail-biting showdown, asked to bat, India posted a massive 253/7, their highest total in T20 internationals. The innings was powered by a breathtaking 89 runs from Sanju Samson. England also responded fiercely, with Jacob Bethell leading the chase and smashing a stunning century. However, India held their nerve in the death overs. Jasprit Bumrah produced a decisive spell, while Axar Patel contributed with two crucial catches and a wicket to secure a seven-run victory for India, helping them seal a spot in the final. Now, this is an opportunity for India to achieve historic milestones. A victory would make them the first team to win a T20 World Cup on home soil and also the first to successfully defend the title.
