Team India is currently riding a wave of success after clinching their third T20 title following a splendid victory against New Zealand in the final on Sunday in Ahmedabad. Now, the Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has set his sights on winning an Olympic gold medal at the 2028 Summer Olympics. It is worth noting that for the first time in more than a century, cricket will return to the Olympic stage. The International Olympic Committee approved the sport’s inclusion in the Los Angeles Games, marking its first appearance since the 1900 Paris Olympics. The format will be T20.

"Obviously it has been a wonderful journey in the last one month. Though it didn't start the way we wanted it to start but then it's part of the sport. Throughout the journey till today it has been very special, and collectively as a team what we have achieved, I think, is right in front of you. So, very happy with that, and the next goal is the Olympic gold and also the team that we work with," Suryakumar said at the press conference in Ahmedabad.

Touching upon India's tremendous success in the shortest format, Suryakumar believed the foundation for this success was laid during the 2024 T20 World Cup. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, India lifted the trophy in Bridgetown, Barbados, which Surya described as a defining moment for the team. Notably, on Sunday, India became the first-ever team to defend the T20 World Cup title on home soil. India's victory in the final against New Zealand earned them their third T20 World Cup title.

"Very excited with the way things have gone since 2024. The way we have played. We have won three ICC trophies. The drought ended in 2024 after a long time. Everything changed post-2024. We played a different brand of cricket in 2024, and from there we understood how this team needs to work forward, play forward and it's been a wonderful journey since then," Suryakumar said.

"We won an ICC Champions Trophy in 2025, played a completely different brand of cricket, and now in 2026, we wanted to do something special in front of the home crowd. So we want to continue doing that in 2027, 2028, 2029 and never stop," he stated.
