Rohit Sharma backs Iyer as India's T20I captain

Former India captain Rohit Sharma has expressed strong confidence in Shreyas Iyer's ability to succeed as India's new T20I skipper. Iyer was recently appointed India's T20I captain, replacing Suryakumar Yadav, who earlier this year guided India to the T20I World Cup title win. Speaking during a high-profile Nuvama Private T20 Mumbai League 2026 encounter at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit highlighted Iyer's successful stint as captain in franchise cricket and believed that Iyer possesses the temperament and experience to flourish in the leadership role.
"Shreyas has been announced as a T20I captain. I'm sure, looking at how he has captained in the last few years for his franchise, he's going to have a good time," Rohit said on the sidelines of the Mumbai T20 League.
βI'm pretty sure nothing has come easy, especially for Surya,β
βHe made his India debut at 30 or 31, if I'm not wrong, which means that he never gave up. He always wanted to be in the fight, and when it came, he wanted to grab it with both hands, and he did it,β Rohit said.
Rohit further said that nothing comes easy and captaincy is something that you have to earn.
βLook, playing in Mumbai, representing Mumbai, teaches you a lot of things. If you ask anyone who has captained India or Mumbai before us, they'll tell you the same thing. Nothing comes easy here. You have to really earn it, so captaincy is also something that you have to earn and earn the respect of people around you. That is something that all these guys have,β he added.
