"If we can play in Pakistan, why not India?": Litton Das T20 World Cup controversy

During the 2026 T20 World Cup, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) made the unexpected decision to withdraw the team from the tournament, which was scheduled to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The board justified the move by highlighting concerns over player safety and security. The controversy began following rising tensions between the cricket administrations of the two neighbouring nations.
Earlier, Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman had been released from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise reportedly acted in accordance with directions issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Following the IPL episode, the BCB asked for alternatives regarding the team's participation in the World Cup. Among their requests was a proposal to relocate Bangladesh's matches to venues outside India.
However, after conducting assessments of tournament venues and security arrangements, the International Cricket Council (ICC) declined Bangldesh's request, saying that there were no substantial threats and also assured BCB of the safety of players. However, BCB maintained its position and did not send the side to the World Cup. After Bangladesh's decision, ICC replaced the team with Scotland for the tournament. Now, speaking on the controversy, Bangladesh batter Litton Das has said that players were willing to participate in the tournament.
βThey told us there was no safety in that country (India). We told them, we have played in Pakistan too. They used to stand outside the room with guns. What can be more dangerous than that?β Das said while speaking to Bangladeshi outlet Prothom Alo.
βIf we can play in Pakistan, why not India,β Litton said.
Talking about Bangladesh's current assignment, they are locked in a three-match ODI series against Australia, in which they have taken a 1-0 lead following a historic win in the first match.
