Ben Stokes dropped, Joe Root to lead England in second New Zealand Test

England have made a change at the helm ahead of the second Test against New Zealand, with experienced batter Joe Root set to captain the side after Ben Stokes was left out of the squad. The match is scheduled to begin at The Oval next Wednesday.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Stokes, along with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, will not be available for selection while an investigation into an alleged breach of team protocols continues. The incident reportedly took place during the early hours of Monday morning following England's dominant win in the first Test against New Zealand, and the governing body stated that the matter remains under review.
Root has previously led England in Test cricket and carries great leadership experience. England enter the second Test with high confidence after securing a memorable victory in the opening match against New Zealand. Meanwhile, Jordan Cox and Jofra Archer have made their return to the side. Archer last played for England during the Ashes series in Australia in December 2025.
England Squad: Joe Root (C), Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, James Rew, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue.
