"It is a good kind of headache": Gill welcomes selection headache ahead of World Cup 2027

India's preparations for the ODI World Cup 2027 have thrown up a great dilemma for the team management, with a few top-order batters making compelling cases for selection. Veteran opener Rohit Sharma, young stars like Yashasvi Jaiswal, and wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan have been in amazing forms. In the recently concluded ODI series against Afghanistan, which India swept 3-0, all three players batted dominantly, cementing their position in the side.

The situation becomes even more interesting because during the recent ODI series against Afghanistan, Virat Kohli was absent due to injury, leading to a reshuffle in the batting order. Shubman Gill occupied the No. 3 position, while Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the innings. The experiment provided India with valuable insights into their batting depth.

Things, however, are expected to change when Kohli returns for the ODI series against England next month. Kohli's return would likely see Gill move back to his preferred opening role. Now, with growing competition for spots, Indian captain Shubman Gill called the situation a good headache.

"I mean, it is a good kind of headache having all the players that are performing, and I think the squad will be announced tomorrow or in the next couple of days. So, we will see the squad and then we will have the best XI to put out anyway. I mean, we will see where everyone's fitness is. If everyone is fit, like I said, we will see who is in the squad and, based on the squad, we will try to make the best XI possible," Gill said at the press conference.

Gill also praised Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was in sensational form in the third ODI, slamming 110 unbeaten to make his massive contribution.

"Honestly, we all know he is a phenomenal player. And it's not easy for any player. If all the players are available, he is the unfortunate one who sometimes misses out. And because Virat bhai was not available in the series, he had the opportunity; he got a couple of games, and he played really well today. So hopefully he will continue to perform and he will continue to keep grabbing the chances," he said.
