Ex-Indian player predicts Gill's return to T20Is

India's disappointing tour of Ireland has triggered a series of reactions as the side's formidable batting line-up failed to counter the challenge posed by Ireland. After suffering a 2-0 defeat in the T20I series in Belfast, India recorded an unwanted milestone by losing to Ireland for the first time in international cricket across any format. Experienced players like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan remained unable to make any impact after being bamboozled by Ireland players.

India's focus now turns to an important series in England, where India will play five T20Is followed by three ODIs. Meanwhile, amid India's utterly disappointing show, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has predicted that Shubman Gill may gradually make his way into India's T20I side. Manjrekar pointed out Gill's imperious form in the IPL 2026, where he hit 732 runs in 16 matches.

"Shubman Gill... just for people to understand, this is a guy who is a T20 batter now and had a tremendous IPL as well. I'm not talking about captaincy, but these are the players you slowly want to introduce back into T20 cricket because they have a little more depth in conditions like these and are used to them as well, like we saw when he played in England and overseas," Manjrekar said on Sony Sports.

"That is the path for Shubman Gill going forward. It won't happen immediately, but I think you will slowly start seeing him back in India's T20 plans."

Gill's last appearance for India came last year in December during a T20I match against South Africa. In whole, he has featured in 36 T20Is for India, amassing 869 runs, including 1 century and 3 fifties.
